HAINES WAS PUT IN BUSINESS BY JOAN, CAROLE LOMBARD AND THE GENEROUS SUPPORT OF MARION DAVIES.
HE WAS THE TOP BOX OFFICE STAR OF 1930 AS WAS JOAN AND WAS GIVEN A CHOICE BY L.B. MAYER. "EITHER TOW THE LINE AND PLAYBALL , GOSSIP COLUMN-WISE OR GET OUT OF THE PICTURE BIZ ALL TOGETHER". WILLIAM HAINES, BEING AN OUT AND PROUD GAY MAN, BRAVELY BID A SWEET "ADIEU" TO METRO LEAVING HIS STARDOM AND THE SECURITY OF A RELIABLE PAYCHECK. HIS CHOICE THOUGH, WON HIM A RESPECT THAT ASSURED HIS NEXT SUCCESS, AS A BRILLIANT DESIGNER TO THE LIKES OF NORMA SHEARER, CONSTANCE BENNETT AND ANN AND JACK WARNER. WITH JOAN STEADFASTLY BY HIS SIDE, THEY WERE BEST FRIENDS UNTIL THE END OF THEIR LIVES. SHE TIRELESSLY PROMOTED HIM, AT PUBLIC EVENTS AND ALL KINDS OF INDUSTRY FUNCTIONS TO KEEP HAINES IN THE PUBLIC EYE. THIS WAS IN PART DUE TO JOAN'S APPRECIATION OF WILLIAM, "BILLY", HAINES FOR HELPING HER OUT IN HER EARLY STRUGGLING HOLLYWOOD DAYS. I THINK THIS SAYS A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF THE POSITIVE QUALITY OF JOAN'S CHARACTER AND LOYALTY TO HER FRIENDS. SHE WAS A BRAVE PERSON EVEN GOING AGAINST L.B.MAYER, WHERE HER FRIENDS WERE CONCERNED.
AND I SALUTE HER GALLANTRY!
